What is Browser Hijacking?

If you have been thinking that advertisements, pop-ups and all the "usual" annoying things that happen to you on a day to day basis while surfing the Internet are the worst that can could ever come to you than it is clear that you never realized the threat and security breaches that browser hijackers bring to both home and corporate computer users.

Shortly and for all means, browser hijacking is the risk that everyone faces while surfing the Internet using an insecure environment. Fortunately, avoiding a browser hijacking is not impossible if you stay aware, and take a few simple precautions.

What is a Browser Hijacker?

This term covers a range of malware. The most generally accepted description for browser hijacking software is external code that changes your Internet Explorer settings. But this is by far one of the most simple and basic features that a browser hijacker could be using to take control of your system and turn it into an easy victim. Generally your home page will be changed and new favorites will be added that point to sites of dubious content. In most cases, the hijacker will have made registry changes to your system, causing the home page to revert back to the unwanted destination even if you change it manually.

Most browser hijackers take advantage of Microsoft Internet Explorer's ability to run ActiveX scripts straight from a web page. These programs will request permission to install them selves via a popup that loads when you visit a certain website. If you are unsure what to decide when such browser activities happen you may easily give them permission to download and install malicious content that could easily open your system to other devastating attacks. At this point, after you accept such a component to install, Internet Explorer will execute the program on your computer, changing your settings. Others may use security holes within Internet Explorer to install themselves automatically without any user interaction at all. Worse, these can be launched from popup ad windows which the user has not even intended to view.

This is why Secure PC Solutions generally advices to never allow unknown components get past your security filters at any step of your browsing activities. Never install unknown or digitally unsigned software. Such basic security measures could save you a lot of time and pressure, not to mention money and private information security.

Some browser hijackers may also install themselves onto your computer system as legitimate programs, leaving an entry in the 'add-remove programs' list in the control panel. There are many tricky methods that browser hijackers use to survive longer without being discovered and they tend to be smarter and smarter, surpassing many aware eyes, but never the analysis and care of Secure PC Solutions 1ClickSpyClean, the only product on the market with enough power to outstand this type of security threat.
